INTRODUCTION TO FUZZY LOGIC AND ITS APPLICATIONS

CSI Cochin chapter organised a technical talk on "Introduction to Fuzzy Logic and its Applications" by Prof. MV Rajesh on 11th November 2010.

Fuzzy sets and fuzzy logic are powerful mathematical tools for modeling and controlling uncertain systems in industry, humanity, and nature; they are facilitators for approximate reasoning in decision making in the absence of complete and precise information. Their role is significant when applied to complex phenomena not easily described by traditional mathematics.

Fuzzy logic is a form of multi-valued logic derived from fuzzy set theory to deal with reasoning that is approximate rather than accurate. In contrast with "crisp logic", where binary sets have binary logic, fuzzy logic variables may have a truth value that ranges between 0 and 1 and is not constrained to the two truth values of classic propositional logic. Furthermore, when linguistic variables are used, these degrees may be managed by specific functions.

Fuzzy logic emerged as a consequence of the 1965 proposal of fuzzy set theory by Lotfi Zadeh. Though fuzzy logic has been applied to many fields, from control theory to artificial intelligence, it still remains controversial among most statisticians, who prefer Bayesian logic, and some control engineers, who prefer traditional two-valued logic.

TECHNICAL TALK ON CLOUD COMPUTING BY MR.SATISH BABU ON 28TH JULY 2010 AT INFOPARK

Cloud computing is a recent paradigm where computing resources are set up and utilized on the Internet using commodity computing clusters that are location-agnostic. The drivers of Cloud Computing include large data centres, commodity computing hardware, virtualization technologies, and a pay-as-you-use basis for charging. The "cloud" refers to the traditional representation of the Internet as a fuzzy-around-the-edges network.

Cloud computing opens up a new business model where users can remotely set up a cloud "instance" that has exactly the kind of configuration that they want, in terms of computing power, RAM, hard disk space and platform (OS plus frameworks, for example RedHat Linux plus LAMP). The instance can be run for any duration (such as a day or a month, intermittently or continuously) and brought down as required, through a remote management interface. Payment is only for the actual duration of use.

In other words, cloud computing allows end-users to avoid spending money up front (as in investing for a physical server) and provides an extremely flexible and scalable way of provisioning computing resources, all through a "rental" mechanism when the resource is actually used. Because of their cost-effectiveness, clouds have become popular for different business uses.

The talk explores the evolution of Cloud Computing and its strengths and weaknesses.
